Much has been said about the Mediterranean Diet and its health benefits, and much scientific evidence has pointed to Sardinia as one of the five Blue Zones on the planet where its inhabitants have lived to 100 years or more. Another Blue Zone, and the only one in the United States, is Loma Linda, California, where many of its inhabitants are Seventh Day Adventists who practice a vegan or vegetarian diet.

Below are 7 vegan foods that mostly come from the Mediterranean, and are thought to be super foods in their own right. These are whole foods that contain most of the nutrients your body needs, in it’s natural, raw state.

Dark Chocolate 

Rich in antioxidants. Dark chocolate is packed full of important minerals, including iron, magnesium, zinc, copper and phosphorus.


Rich in vitamin K for blood clotting. Broccoli is high in many vitamins and minerals, including folate, potassium, manganese, and vitamins C and K1.


Capers are, infact, called superfoods because they are low in cholesterol and yet a good source of protein, fiber, calcium, iron and numerous vitamins! 

Apples or Pears

Apples are a valuable part of any diet. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which can help control hunger and regulate blood sugar.

Black Olives 

Eliminates cancer risk – The monounsaturated fats and vitamin E found in black olives provide cellular protection.

Black olives are a good source of iron, which is important for your red blood cells to transport oxygen.


Berries are low in calories and extremely nutritious. In addition to being high in antioxidants, they also contain several vitamins and minerals.


The antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins in dates help support brain, digestive, and heart health and protect against disease.
